WaterWays: ACT Government s Water Sensitive Urban Design General Code encourages commercial developers to use greywater recycling March 2008

Waterways is part of the ACT Government s broader strategy of responsible water resource management to ensure the future sustainability of the community. The Code released early 2008 incorporates the principles of water sensitive urban design (WSUD) which aims to integrate the management of the total water cycle into the urban development process. It uses regulatory pressure to change design and behaviour to improve management of water resources, and will change developers and architects attitudes and equipment specifications.

This code applies to:
development of new residential neighbourhoods and estates;
re-development or in-fill development within the existing built environment; and
institutional, commercial and industrial development

This code provides mandatory targets for mains water use reduction and for stormwater quality and quantity management. These targets must be met for all new developments and redevelopments. The code describes a broad range of measures that can be utilised to achieve these targets and identify a number of assessment tools that can be used to demonstrate that the targets are being met. They also provide a range of acceptable solutions to assist with meeting the targets on less complex developments

Development applications and building approvals are required to be submitted for new developments. Thevarious assessment codes in the Territory Plan provide the rules criteria that must be met in relation to WSUD and demonstrate that the relevant targets will be achieved. Put simply, developers are now obliged to incorporate water savings equipment and designs that meet quantifiable savings against benchmarks of 2003 usage, in order to gain approval for their developments.

Options for implementation of actions and measures include:

Mains water use reduction
- Water efficient irrigation systems for playing fields and open space
- Use of stormwater to replace mains water for irrigation
- Water efficient landscaping, both on public open space and within leases
- Rainwater tanks for garden watering and internal uses, such as toilet flushing

- Use of recycled greywater for irrigation and toilet flushing on individual dwellings
- Wastewater treatment and reticulation to commercial or industrial users who do not require water of a mains water standard
Wastewater reuse
- Use of large-scale treated sewage effluent schemes
- Use of domestic greywater, treated or untreated

OASIS greywater treatment systems from Nubian are engineered solutions offering high quality recycled water with strong risk management technology. Developers of townhouses, apartments, community centres and office blocks are in discussion with Nubian to achieve regulatory targets for water savings, using recycled grey water.

Water bills on the rise to pay for Queensland's $9bn grid

WATER bills for home owners in southeast Queensland will rise more than 70 per cent over the next five years to help pay for the $9billion water grid the Bligh Government is building to drought-proof the region.

Queensland Planning Minister Paul Lucas said yesterday the average increase in the region would be a modest $1.30 a week next financial year but that water bills would increase by roughly this amount every year for at least the next five years.

The Government's estimates state that the average water bill for Brisbane residents in the current financial year is expected to be $438, and next year it is expected to be $506 - a rise of $68, or roughly $1.30 a week.

But the figures also show progressive rises over coming years, so that by 2012-13, water bills in Brisbane are expected to be $747, more than 70 per cent higher than they are now.

The water grid, which was devised to distribute water better throughout southeast Queensland, will come into operation from July 1.

As well as the water grid, the Government is putting in two new dams and recycling and desalination plants, to bring greater water security to southeast Queensland, which is at risk of running out of water because of the drought.

Nubian Appoints Cyprus Distrubutor for OASIS Greywater Treatment Systems

Nubian Water Systems announced the appointment of K C Purewater in Nicosia, Cyprus, to distribute greywater treatement systems to alleviate residential water shortages.
Australian-owned Nubian sees dry countries with water scarcity as ideal export markets for its award-winning OASIS greywater treatment systems. Cyprus has suffered several years of poor rain, and tough water restrictions now exist on potable water supplies. K C Purewater serves local markets with water filtration and plumbing services.  They now offer Cypriots an opportunity to recycle water safely. The OASIS unit is on display at an environmental exhibition in Nicosia in March for review by authorities and consumers. Nubian and KC Purewater seek approval from authorities to introduce the systems.

The system is an aerated biofilter with ultraviolet sterilisation. Requiring no chemicals and only periodic servicing, OASIS offers Cypriots substantial water savings by recycling water from showers, basins and laundry. Green gardens are protected through continuous supply that erratic rainfall cannot achieve.

Nubian has installed systems into the Australian market which is one of the driest continents in the world. The Australian authorities have set high standards for recycling systems to achieve water quality and reliable operation before being allowed to reuse the water for toilet flushing and laundry, and above ground spray irrigation.

The system is patented globally and ongoing discussions are occurring with interested distributors worldwide. In many countries legislation is modest regarding greywater treatment, and some countries are looking at Australian regulations as a guide.

Nubian Receives Green Light Accreditation for Greywater Treatment Technology for South Australia

OASIS GT600 Provides a Welcome Water Boost for Home Owners with Gardens and Scarce Water Supplies

40% Saving on Precious Drinking Water with Nubian s Greywater Treatment System

Annual Saving of 148,000 litres Potable Water in a family of four

Australian-owned Nubian Water Systems has now gained accreditation in South Australia for the introduction of their revolutionary OASIS Domestic Greywater Treatment System (GT600). OASIS takes the greywater generated by baths, showers, laundry and hand basins and treats it to a high quality, suitable for safe garden irrigation using sprays or drippers. The OASIS is a practical and affordable urban solution for garden owners and sustainable landscapers and architects.

One of the great benefits of the OASIS GT600 is its capacity to deliver a reliable water supply for gardens in times of drought and tight water restrictions. Since 1 October 2007 South Australian householders have only been able to use drippers and hand-held hoses fitted with a trigger nozzle on their gardens and lawns for a maximum of three hours a week. This is stressing many plants and trees that require more water. OASIS now provides significant extra water for mature and sensitive plants. Property owners can be assured of a water supply for maintaining their gardens which typically contribute 8% or more to the value of their property.

Drip Irrigation and Greywater Recycling Offers Solution to Councils in Fear of Backyard Toxic Flooding

As the formidable impact of climate change and scarce supplies of water threaten communities worldwide, conserving water has become an increasingly urgent issue. Australia is particularly affected where fresh water is one of the country s scarcest resources and where domestic gardening consumes an inordinate supply of the water.

Today with after effects of the severe droughts and water restrictions of last year, most of urban Australia still remains under strict water restrictions. Victoria s Councils however are often stalling efforts to assist in an area where hope for water conservation is gaining momentum, the practice of greywater recycling.

Many are fearful of complaints that this new source of domestic water for gardens will cause flooding of effluent to adjoining properties this is actually only a risk when consumers use untreated greywater diversion systems instead of quality recycling systems.

Many councils have adopted a highly regulatory approach during this critical time of short water supply with an onerous legal framework. Instead, they could rely on the rigorous accreditation process demanded by the EPA and Health dept that ensures the high quality of water won t be a problem from the recycling systems.
